National's Effort to Eradicate Poverty in Uganda (NEEPU)
In Gertrude Kabatalemwa's words: "Nationals' Effort to Eradicate Poverty in Uganda (NEEPU) is a Non-Government Organisation, registered with the Ugandan government. This organization has been in operation since1997. The goal of NEEPU is to help eradicate poverty in Uganda. We started by training the grass roots in hand crafts especially in basket weaving in rural areas. NEEPU started with 7 women who saw our vision and now more than 20 women weave baskets as their income generating activity for their household. In these groups we have widows, needy, school drop outs. We have various weaving materials e.g Banana Fiber, Rafia, Sisal, Reeds, Millet & Wild millet stalks, Papyrus and Palm leaves. Also we have started to train young girls in our Nyamabuga Village Project School. With the emphasis on girl-child not only to give her book knowledge, but also craft skills "With Hands On" in order to start them off at a tender age, in order to carry on with these skills which may reward them in case they don't make it for further education. Basket weaving activity has uplifted the standard of women in villages, they are the direct benefactors when Global Crafts makes an order. " |
