Nuu is located in a remote area of Eastern Kenya, a place where many houses are built of mud bricks and thatched roofs, where there is no electricity and little water. Community members struggle to make extra money by selling crafts to pay school fees for their children. Life here is a struggle for children with every advantage. Imagine what the prospects are for a child who is mentally or physically challenged. The Nuu Unit for the Mentally Handicapped is a boarding school that takes in children and young adults ages 8-30 with learning difficulties, mental handicaps, and physical impairments. Taking their special needs into consideration, the children are given a basic education. The center also offers vocational training. Currently there are thirty children and young adults in the program. The Unit sells enough jewelry to employ one young woman full time. She is proud of her job and the ability to make her own income. In a place where jobs are scarce, the Unit's goal is not only to ready the special students to seek employment, but to provide as many jobs as possible. The group accepts the local donations of high-gloss magazines that they use in making the paper beads for the jewelry. |
