Zimbabwe Carvings It's been more than a year since we first heard from Dominic Mushati and we
were delighted to finally receive some of his art. These hard olive wood carvings
are very detailed and the grain of the wood adds to the beauty of the pieces. While
Dominic is a member of the Shona tribe, he learned his wood carving skills from the
Ndebele tribe in South and Western Zimbabwe. He sent free-standing pieces, a
wall hanging, and some 15-key finger pianos or "mbira" made by Shona youths in
Harare from scraps of metal, wood, and wire.

Carved Gourd Instrument On consignment from Boaz Moseti in Mombasa, these instruments
are a variation on the one made with flattened bottlecaps on a "Y" of
wood. Two tops of the gourds carved by the Kamba tribe are filled with
metal scraps, sealed with leather, and accented by the flattened bottlecaps in the middle.
They are definitely an unusual percussion instrument.
Each instrument is a different size but
the gourd top averages about 10" long and the instrument from top to bottom averages
13".
